An initiative for the creative and entrepreneurial practices that drive the music industry.

Vincent Fang

MEPoP Industry Fellow

Vincent Fang, our inaugural MEPoP Industry Fellow is a giant of the Mandopop industry. Renowned as a lyricist, his illustrious career spans decades across iconic collaborations with superstar Jay Chou and accolades such as Taiwan Golden Melody Awards nominations for Best Lyricist and awards for best film theme song at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Taiwan Golden Horse Awards.

Joshua Leung

MEPoP Industry Affliate

Joshua Leung is a Los Angeles-born music producer and songwriter whose multicultural background shapes his distinctive sound and genre-spanning approach. Collaborating with writers and producers worldwide, he has written and produced for leading K-pop, C-pop, and J-pop artists including ITZY, Jolin Tsai, Snow Man, Nissy, KAT-TUN, Rainie Yang, MCND, May J., Gospellers, Stefanie Sun, A-Mei, Show Lo, Momo Wu, Eric Chou, and many more. He has also worked as music director for Jolin Tsai and Jeannie Hsieh, as well as vocal producer for Jolin Tsai’s international collaborations with Hardwell and Alesso.

Meet our team, comprised of experienced academics and industry practitioners.

Mr. Jonathan Serbin

Co-director

Mr. Serbin has represented some of the world’s most-recognised music brands in their Asia expansion. He was most recently Co-President of Warner Music Asia and CEO of Greater China of Warner Music, overseeing eleven countries / territories across the region. He was formerly Head of Asia for Billboard and is now co-founder of Mammoth Media Asia which is partnering with iHeartMedia to develop world-class, original podcast content in Asia. He has also served as a music-sector lawyer, investment banker and entrepreneur.

Prof. Rujing Stacy Huang

Co-director

Professor Huang received her PhD in ethnomusicology from Harvard University and is currently Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Hong Kong. She works at the intersections of musicology, critical AI studies and philosophy. She is a co-director of the AI Song Contest, an annual international songwriting competition exploring human-AI partnership much covered by mainstream media worldwide. She is a founding co-editor of Music and Data (UC Press), a thematic journal examining emerging technologies' impact on global music cultures.

Prof. Daniel Chua

Chief Advisor

Professor Daniel KL Chua earned his PhD in musicology from Cambridge University and is currently the Chair Professor of music at the University of Hong Kong. Before joining HKU, he was the Director of Studies at St John’s College, Cambridge, and later Professor of Music Theory and Analysis at King’s College London.

Ms. Chen Ruan

Co-ordinator

Ruan Chen holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Finance from the University of Hong Kong. She is a dramaturg and arts administrator working across cultural and educational fields in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Her practice spans programme coordination, marketing, and curatorial support for large-scale projects, alongside dramaturgical research and writing in contemporary theatre.
